Biography: Caroline Aherne was a BAFTA winning comic writer and actress best known for her comic character Mrs Merton and for her sitcom The Royle Family. In the mid '90s she went by the name Caroline Hook, having taken her husband's name (New Order bassist Peter Hook) but reverted back to Aherne following their divorce. She died from cancer in 2016 at the age of 52.
