Business Of Boyscouts - Millions Of Hours Of Service Over Time
The business of Boyscouts began in 1910 and is all about being prepared, helping people, and making communities better places for those who live there.
As of 2010, more than 28.3 million hours of service were reportedly completed by 3.8 million scouts and volunteers combined. Put a monetary value on all of these projects and services provided and the business of Boyscouts gave over $600,000,000 worth of themselves that year.
The five main projects completed or services provided in 2010 are:
- Food collection and distribution
- Litter cleanup/community beautification
- Military support/appreciation
- Conservation projects
- National Park Service Resource
Millions of young men, and now young women, participate in serving their communities and other activities like camping out, cooking, money management, film making and many other activities through the Boy Scout programs.
The Boy Scout program has four separate divisions, each one age appropriate to those specific members. Boys from age 7 to 10 are join as a Cub Scout, and boys age 11 and over are part of a Boy Scout troop. Boys and/or girls over 14 and younger than 18 can be Varsity scouts, and those over 14 and under 21 can join a Venturing crew.
All four of these Boy Scout programs operate according to the ideals set out in its oath and law. The Scouting program offers boys and young men and women opportunities to challenge themselves by expanding their knowledge base and horizons by learning new skills and learning leadership skills. The program also focuses on building character, confidence, and self-esteem by adhering to basic values.
Most experts agree that to help keep young boys and girls out of trouble and from making poor choices when they are young, as well as instilling values of a strong character and a good moral compass, it is important to get them involved at a young age in wholesome activities. The Boyscouts excel at that very thing.
While it may sound like mostly fun and games - doing things like camping and learning other skills, it is actually an integral part of a young child's development and one you may want to seriously consider for your young son or daughter.
There are a number of famous people who were Boy Scouts. The highest rank in Boy Scouting is the Eagle award and there are several notable people whom have achieved this rank. It takes years of dedicated work and leadership to become an Eagle Scout. Some famous Eagle Scouts include basketball star and U.S. senator Bill Bradley, U.S. president Gerald Ford, movie director Steven Spielberg, and journalist Walter Cronkite.
While many of us may not actually think of the Boyscout organization as a business, with everything this organization does for the young people of our country it may seem more like a charitable organization than the business it is, but it is a business and relies on all of us to help keep it moving forward with it's mission.
